Free Bird 'Eric' the Turkey

EDITOR’S NOTE: This obituary is purely for entertainment purposes. Some of the content was provided by the New Castle Turkey Facebook page.

Free Bird “Eric” the Turkey passed away Friday, April 13, 2018 at the age of 2.

The young Tom was born on a poultry farm in Muncie to Harold and Grace Kevoian (no relation to Bob Kevoian of the Bob & Tom Show, given they are turkeys). After the processing of his parents, Free Bird escaped the farm and returned to the land of his ancestors: New Castle.

He bravely led a small group of fellow turkeys out of the clutches of a prison camp to freedom.

Free Bird settled near West Lawn Cemetery with a young hen named Jessica. They had three kids: Jeremiah, Danny and Dakota. Jessica and the three kids were relocated to a farm in Plainfield last summer, but Free Bird managed to keep in touch with an iPhone he found behind a local business.

Late last week, Free Bird launched a Facebook page, New Castle Turkey, to correct the fake news being spread about his Ind. 3 adventures. Free Bird was adamant that the cars were the ones blocking his commute to work, and politely asked drivers to stay off of his road. Free Bird was a seasonal employee for several bait shops where he procured grubs for local fishermen.

During his final days he was a celebrity, having been featured in many newspaper articles, television segments and radio clips both locally and across the country. Free Bird was often a topic of discussion on the Henry County Scanners page.

He leaves to cherish his memory his turkey family, as well as the many law enforcement officers and concerned citizens of Henry County who frequently ushered him safely across the road.

The Boss Hog of Liberty podcast has produced a memorial video, which is posted on their Facebook page. For those that wish to honor Free Bird the Turkey, order a turkey club at your favorite sandwich shop.
