Eaglebots heading to Indianapolis

The Eastwood Eaglebots have secured a spot at the VEX IQ Robotics State Competition at Lucas Oil Stadium March 10.

The Eaglebots rookie team took first place at the VEX IQ competition Feb. 3 in Liberty.

“The team went with the attitude of ‘not if we qualify, but when we qualify,’” said team co-coach Hannah Warner. “Through teamwork, strategy, and good communication both teams placed to make it into the finals.”

Warner coaches the team with Stephanie Renfro.

The rookie team placed first in the finals at the Liberty competition, with drivers Elijah Blankenship and Xavier Sanders scoring 114 points in an alliance match with Laurel Elementary.

Warner said the Eaglebots teams overcame several trials and tribulations during the Liberty competition, including a broken motor on one of the robots.

The students quickly got the problem fixed and got back into the competition.

“As a coach, it was one of the most stressful but happy days I have yet to encounter,” Warner said. “After they announced the Eastwood Eaglebots for qualifying for state, I became emotional. These kids have worked so hard. I am beyond happy with this teams. It was amazing watching them work together for the ultimate goal to qualify for state.”

Warner said the students are lucky to have the support of Eastwood Elementary School Principal Jacob White.

“He wakes up early, gives up his Saturdays to come support these kids,” Warner said. “After we found out we placed first, looking up in the stands and seeing his smile was very gratifying. He truly cares about the success of our children.”
